JND Environmental Solutions

Environmental Compliance and Wastewater Services

Environmental compliance is more than meeting a deadline or submitting a report. It means understanding your permit, knowing what regulators expect, and recognizing potential problems before they become violations.

JND Environmental Solutions brings more than 50 years of combined environmental experience to every project. Our team has worked directly with environmental permits, regulatory reporting, wastewater programs, inspections, sampling, compliance assessments, and corrective actions.

We support public and private organizations with wastewater and pretreatment compliance, permitting, regulatory reporting, inspections, assessments, and ongoing environmental compliance needs.

Our Core Services

  • Wastewater and pretreatment compliance
  • Permitting and regulatory reporting
  • Environmental compliance support
  • Compliance assessments and audits

Wastewater Compliance

Wastewater violations are not always caused by major treatment problems.

Sometimes the problem starts with a small detail: a sample collected from the wrong location, a composite sample collected incorrectly, an outdated permit limit used for reporting, or a process change that was never reflected in the facility’s compliance program.

Those details can quickly lead to additional sampling, a notice of violation, or enforcement action.

Our team helps facilities stay on top of wastewater requirements and identify potential problems before they become larger compliance issues.

Monthly Wastewater Sampling and Laboratory Result Review

We manage routine wastewater sampling based on the requirements of your discharge permit.

Samples are collected from the approved sampling location and submitted to an accredited laboratory using proper chain-of-custody procedures.

Once the results are available, we review them against your permit limits and applicable requirements.

We look for:

  • Permit limit exceedances
  • Results approaching permit limits
  • Unusual changes from previous sampling events
  • Missing or questionable results
  • Results that may require follow-up

We do not simply forward a laboratory report. We review the results and help you understand what they mean from a compliance standpoint.

If something needs attention, we let you know quickly so there is time to understand the cause and determine what needs to happen next.

If an exceedance occurs, your permit or pretreatment program may require notification, resampling, or other follow-up within a specific timeframe. Reviewing the results early helps keep those requirements from being missed.

Self-Monitoring Report Preparation

A self-monitoring report should match the facility’s permit, laboratory results, flow information, and operating records.

We prepare self-monitoring reports using the information required by your permit and review the supporting data before the report is finalized.

The facility’s responsible official or authorized representative reviews and signs the required certification before submission.

We can also track recurring sampling, reporting, certification, and permit deadlines so important dates do not get overlooked.

You May Need Our Help If You:

  • Received a wastewater result above a permit limit
  • Received a warning letter or notice of violation
  • Have a pretreatment inspection coming up
  • Need a new wastewater discharge permit
  • Have a permit renewal approaching
  • Changed a process or added equipment that affects wastewater
  • Lost the employee responsible for sampling or reporting
  • Are unsure whether your facility is a Significant Industrial User
  • Need help understanding your permit
  • Want experienced support managing routine sampling and reporting

Permitting and Regulatory Reporting

A facility can be operating within its permit limits and still have a compliance issue because of a missed deadline, incomplete application, missing certification, or overlooked permit condition.

That is why we look beyond the form itself.

We assist with permit applications and renewals and review the information for consistency with current operations and previous regulatory submissions.

Once a permit is issued, we can walk through it with your team so everyone understands what is required.

That may include:

  • Permit limits
  • Sampling locations
  • Required pollutants or parameters
  • Sampling frequency
  • Sample type
  • Reporting deadlines
  • Notification requirements
  • Special permit conditions

When needed, we go through the permit line by line.

The goal is straightforward: the people responsible for compliance should know what needs to be done, when it is due, and who is responsible for doing it.

For organizations with recurring reporting requirements, we can also review laboratory results, identify missing information, track deadlines, and prepare regulatory reports.

Environmental Compliance

Environmental compliance problems often show up when something changes.

A new process starts. Different chemicals are brought onsite. Equipment changes. A permit is renewed. A longtime employee leaves.

Sometimes the regulation has not changed. The way the requirement is being managed has.

Our team brings more than 50 years of combined environmental experience working with permits, reporting, inspections, environmental programs, and regulatory requirements.

Wastewater and pretreatment are an important part of our work, but our experience also extends to broader environmental compliance responsibilities across public and private operations.

We look at how requirements are being handled in day-to-day operations and identify areas that may need attention.

That may include:

  • Permits and regulatory requirements
  • Environmental records
  • Written plans and procedures
  • Inspection documentation
  • Reporting schedules
  • Compliance calendars
  • Facility operating practices

Sometimes a program only needs a few adjustments.

Other times, records are incomplete, plans are outdated, responsibilities are unclear, or recurring requirements are being handled without a consistent process.

We identify the gaps, explain why they matter, and help put practical solutions in place.

Regulatory Changes and New Requirements

Environmental requirements do not stay the same forever.

Regulations change. Permit conditions are revised. Reporting obligations are updated. New requirements are introduced.

We help clients understand changes that may affect their operations and determine whether permits, procedures, monitoring, reporting, or compliance programs need to be updated.

Organizations may also contact us when they are starting or expanding an operation, changing a process, preparing for an inspection, buying or selling a facility, conducting environmental due diligence, or responding to a warning letter or notice of violation.

Compliance Assessments and Audits

Finding a compliance problem during an internal review gives you an opportunity to address it before an inspector finds it.

Our assessments look at how environmental requirements are being handled in day-to-day operations.

We review the documents, but we do not stop there.

We review the permit. We review the records. We look at the sampling history. And we walk the facility.

Depending on the scope of the assessment, we may review:

  • Environmental and wastewater permits
  • Sampling records
  • Laboratory reports
  • Regulatory reports
  • Flow records
  • Written plans and procedures
  • Spill response procedures
  • Chemical storage areas
  • Floor drains and sumps
  • Treatment equipment
  • Sampling locations
  • Recordkeeping practices

We also talk with the people who operate the processes and manage the program.

That matters because written procedures do not always reflect what is happening today. Processes change. Equipment changes. Responsibilities change.

Our job is to identify those differences before they create a compliance problem.

After the assessment, we explain what we found, why it matters, and what should be addressed first.

If an inspection is already scheduled, we can also help prepare your organization by reviewing records, permit requirements, sampling documentation, known issues, and corrective actions before the inspector arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Significant Industrial User?

A Significant Industrial User, or SIU, is a facility that meets certain criteria under federal pretreatment regulations.

This may include facilities subject to categorical pretreatment standards, facilities that discharge 25,000 gallons per day or more of process wastewater, or facilities designated by the local utility because of the nature or potential impact of their discharge.

If you are unsure how your facility is classified, we can review your permit and applicable pretreatment requirements with you.

Do I need a wastewater discharge permit?

It depends on your operation, wastewater discharge, and the requirements of the utility receiving the wastewater.

Many facilities that discharge process wastewater to a municipal sewer need a wastewater discharge permit or other written authorization. Some utilities also regulate smaller users.

We can help review the local requirements and determine what applies to your facility.

What happens if a sample result exceeds a permit limit?

Start with your permit.

Many permits require the facility to notify the utility after becoming aware of an exceedance. Additional sampling or other follow-up may also be required within a specified timeframe.

We review laboratory results as soon as they are available so potential problems can be identified quickly.

That gives the facility time to investigate the cause, meet notification requirements, perform required resampling, and document corrective actions.

Always follow the requirements and deadlines in your specific permit.

What is the difference between a grab sample and a composite sample?

A grab sample is collected at one specific point in time.

A composite sample combines multiple samples collected over a specified period and may provide a more representative picture of the wastewater discharge.

Your permit identifies which sampling method is required for each pollutant. Using the wrong sample type can create a compliance issue or make the result unusable.

How often do I have to sample my wastewater?

Your permit and local pretreatment program determine your sampling frequency.

Depending on the facility and pollutant, sampling may be required monthly, quarterly, semiannually, or on another schedule.

We build the sampling schedule directly from your permit so the requirements are clear.

Do you use an accredited laboratory?

Yes. Wastewater samples are submitted to accredited laboratories using proper chain-of-custody procedures.

Once the results are received, we review the laboratory report against the facility’s permit limits and compliance requirements.

We also look for exceedances, unusual changes, and results that may require additional attention.

Who signs the self-monitoring report?

The signer is generally a responsible corporate official or authorized representative who meets the requirements of the permit and pretreatment program.

JND Environmental Solutions can prepare the report and supporting documentation. The facility’s authorized representative reviews and signs the required certification before submission.

How far in advance should I start a permit renewal?

Start early.

Regulatory agencies or utilities often require renewal applications before an existing permit expires. The exact timeframe should be stated in your permit.

Starting early provides time to gather required information and documentation.

Can you help if we have already received a notice of violation?

Yes.

The first step is understanding exactly what happened and what the utility or agency is requesting.

We can review the notice, permit requirements, laboratory results, reports, and related records.

We can then help identify what needs to be addressed, assist with the response, and support corrective actions.
